Day 24: A Taste of Normalcy
Whenever there are things that could remind us the “what used to be,” there are no second thoughts. Just go for it.
Surprises became gifts when that afternoon, Jay, asked me to join them in playing badminton. The words, “covered court and free” caught my attention.
“Really?” I said to myself. “A covered court on the island?”
I rushed to my room and hastily changed to my badminton gear;
Shirt – checked
Shorts – checked
Rubber shoes – checked
Socks – checked
Racket – shouldn’t forget that
It was a thrill when I kept on asking where we were going to play.
“We are going to the COM,” Jay said.
“Taraflex floors?” I asked.
“Carpeted,” replied Jay.
“What the…” I was in a badminton nirvana. I have never played on a carpeted floor before.
The gymnasium was spectacular, a huge building that housed a basketball court and in its adjoining room was a multipurpose hall with badminton nets set up.
It didn’t take long before the other Filipinos arrived and the queuing started.
It was the first time I felt like I was playing at home. All I wanted to do was play there until they close, unfortunately, they did. At ten in the evening, the lights went out and we had to leave the gym.

I believe I understand your “nirvana” feeling Doc Z. I am like that with RUNNING
Madz,
It was like playing in badminton heaven when I finally stood in the court inside the multipurpose hall. Oh, such a wonderful feeling.
Btw, Madz, you’d love the rubber tracks at the oval.
Z
I understand Doc Z! I am loving the rubber tracks of the oval at the Ultra
When did you get the racquet restrung?
Wow, that’s a nice court! I’ve only ever played badminton in the back yard. I don’t think you’ll run out of fun things to do in Pohnpei any time soon – just judging by the first three weeks’ worth of posts. I really need to play tourist in Houston, learn more about the city I live in! You’ve inspired me.
Hi Holly,
I actually brought two badminton racquets with me. The other one was my favorite. That reminds me that I have to order soon. Maybe after payday hehehe.
I’m sure there are things that you do there in Houston that people would love to do once you’ve Written about them.
Likewise, I get inspired from your stories too.
