Lost at Pohnpei

One of the advantages of living on the island of Pohnpei is that you would never be bored. Thanks to the scenic natural beauty of the mountainous area, Kolonia houses one of the temptresses of the tourists that is located at the top of a mountain called Cupid’s Bar and Grille.

It took me ten minutes to drive from the airport, just beside the Australian embassy, to reach Cupid’s Bar and Grille that overlooks the ocean where one could view the sunrise in the East and the sunset in the West.

There is a spacious parking with a viewing deck and windows where you could see the cliff.

Mr. Frank Ditchen, the congenial half German and half Pohnpeian manager was there almost every night and entertains and attends to his guests personally. No wonder, he has regular customers, foreign and local alike.

They open at four in the afternoon and, like almost every bar in town, closes at midnight. Beer starts at $2.00 (San Miguel, Asahi Aqua Blue) up to $4.00 (Corona, Red Stripe, Bud light).

Appetizers start at $3.00 (Teriyaki meatballs and Beef Kabab) up to $5.00 (Chicken wings and Pork Ribs)

The sound system is superb with an audio room for the DJ to adjust and change the music. The dining area can be converted into a dance floor right in front of the bar for easy access to the drinks.

A newly installed LCD television was in the main hall that can be used to watch MTVs, news, or AVPs. It could also be used for Karaoke. He just recently bought the unit from my home town, the Philippines. I was one of the first, rather, would like to think that I was one of the first who used it.

Certain arrangements could be made to reserve some portion or to close down the whole restaurant for family or company affairs. Frank would definitely be happy to talk the specifics with you.

I’d definitely come back to the Cupid’s Bar and Grille and would catch the captivating sunset over the mountains with the lush green forest in the background.
